RESIDENTS of Roviana Lagoon in South New Georgia are calling for urgent development and improved infrastructure, particularly the construction of the long-awaited Bareke Bridge, which would link Munda to other parts of the lagoon.
For decades, infrastructure development in Roviana Lagoon and the broader Tetepare Rendova Constituency has been neglected.
Concerned residents claim that since previous Members of Parliament (MPs) held office, there has been a lack of tangible progress despite repeated calls for improved services and infrastructure.
Bridges, as key infrastructure, play a critical role in enhancing connectivity and facilitating transportation.
The proposed Bareke Bridge is seen as a crucial link that would not only ease transportation, but also promote economic activities, better access to essential services and overall development for the region’s people.
Residents continue to voice their hopes that 2025 will mark a turning point for development in Roviana Lagoon, raising living standards and addressing long-standing concerns over infrastructure neglect.
They urge current leaders to prioritise these issues and deliver meaningful progress for the constituency
Speaking to Solomon Star in an interview, a resident from Roviana Lagoon, James Kera said this year will be an interesting year as Roviana people want to see changes take place.
“People of Roviana Lagoon have suffered for long time now in terms of infrastructure development, transportation and socioeconomic activities,” Mr Kera said.
“I hope that more tangible development will be implemented this year for the benefit of people of the Roviana Lagoon,” he said.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for South New Georgia, Rendova and Tetepare (SNGRT) Constituency, David Lani Gina, in his constituency tour during the festive season highlighted his priorities, which include socioeconomic activities and development infrastructures.
“To promote rural economic growth, I am committed to expanding the productive sector, especially in agriculture. Our communities have great potential and we must unlock it.
“I am pleased to announce the establishment of a network of copra and cocoa buying centres, with the first already operational in Roviana Lagoon,” MP Gina said.
“This initiative will provide better market access and ensure fair pricing for our hardworking farmers.
“We must move away from a mindset of dependency. I encourage everyone to take ownership of their economic future by becoming active participants in development.
“Together, we can create a stronger, self-reliant community.
“Critical infrastructure, such as bridges, remains a priority. Improved connectivity will not only ease transportation but also open doors for greater economic opportunities across our constituency,” he added.
