A CHIEF from Guadalcanal has called on relevant authorities to investigate the sale of expired goods by a Bangladeshi-owned shop on the eastern outskirts of Honiara.
The chief, who requested anonymity, made the call after a number of expired goods were found on the shelves of Bangladeshi-owned shop.
“The community’s interests are endangered by the health hazards posed by the sale of such products to consumers as many do not check the expiry dates of products before purchasing them.
“This is a serious matter and responsible authorities must wake up to this sad reality which is becoming prevalent,” he said.
The Guadalcanal chief added, this case is reflective of the lack of adherence to regulations and standards governing the sale of consumable goods by some foreign shop owners and also the failure of responsible government authorities on keeping a tab on businesses.
“The government needs to take action to ensure shop owners do not sell expired goods. Foreigners are taking advantage of the government’s failure to constantly monitor the condition and prices of goods sold in shops,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, local residents have also expressed concern over this discovery and also emphasized the need for stricter monitoring of retail businesses.
‘’The health and safety of the community are paramount and collaborative efforts are essential to maintain standards of quality and integrity in local businesses,” they said.
As the call for action gains momentum, the chief is hopeful that relevant authorities will act swiftly to address this issue and ensure that such practices are wed out.
