THE AUKI Catholic diocese members and the respective Catholic parishioners in Malaita province will soon miss the presence of their beloved bishop, Peter Houhou from the diocese.
This comes after the announcement of Bishop Houhou’s new appointment as the new bishop for Gizo Catholic diocese in Western Province.
He served as Catholic bishop for six years in Auki Catholic diocese after he was Ordained Bishop on 14 October 2018 in Auki.
His new appointment was announced on Friday 16th at 12:00 noon in the Vatican, Italy, which is 10 pm in Solomon Islands.
According to Catholic communications, Solomon: “The Apostolic Nunciature in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands informs us that His Holiness, Pope Francis, has accepted the resignation from the government of the Diocese of Gizo, in the Solomon Islands, presented by H.E. Most Rev. Luciano CAPELLI, SDB.
He appointed Right Rev. Houhou as his successor.
The Right Rev. Houhou, 51, hails from Marau, on the island of Guadalcanal.
He entered the seminary and completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the Holy Spirit Major Seminary in Bomana, Papua New Guinea.
On 3 July 1999, he was ordained a priest and incardinated in the archdiocese of Honiara.
Since ordination as a priest, he has held the following Ministries and offices:
• July 1999 to April 2000: Assistant Parish Priest of Ruavatu Parish, Honiara
• April 2000 to May 2006: Parish Priest – Makina Parish in Marau, Honiara
• May 2006 to Feb. 2015: Parish Priest – Visale Parish, Honiara
• May 2011 – 2018: Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Honiara
Episcopal appointments:
• Appointed Bishop of Auki on 3 July 2018
• Ordained Bishop on 14 October 2018
• Appointed Bishop of Gizo on 16 June 2023
