The Solomon Islands Government, through Solomon Islands Meteorology Service (SIMS) is hosting two meetings to address the issue of climate change and natural disasters from a Meteorological Service responsibility.
They will be held back to back at the FFA Centre, West Khola Ridge, Honiara, Solomon Islands between the 14th and 18th of August 2017.
First, the Fourth Meeting of Pacific Meteorological Council (PMC) from 14-18th of August 2017 and second, the Second Pacific Ministerial meeting on Meteorology on the 18th of August 2017.
The purpose of the PMC is to discuss strategies and collaborate on agreements toward more sustainable development in: weather, climate, water and ocean services in the Pacific.
The PMC meeting will include PMC members, cabinet ministers from the Pacific region responsible for Meteorology, senior officials from South Pacific Regional Environment Project (SPREP) member countries and development partners, Council of the Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP), United Nations agencies and other collaborating organisations and institutions.
The purpose of the Second Pacific Ministerial Meeting on Meteorology (PMMM) is to allow Ministers responsible for Meteorology to share and discuss relevant information relating to national meteorological services and national and regional sustainable development.
This will include an increase in need relating to climate change and national disaster management and how this fits into regional and international commitments and responsibilities.
Weather, climate, water and ocean services are at a frontline in regional development, safeguarding and poverty reduction; addressing mitigation and adaption strategies and providing accurate, timely and appropriate warnings and forecasts.
The majority of hazards in the Pacific are climate and weather related with evidence suggesting an increased intensity in the frequency and intensity of these events.
Invited attendees only will be engaged in the PMC and PMMM however updates and media releases will be made available daily from SIMS to all major media outlets in the Solomon Islands. A specific delegation of international media will also be in attendance.
