PAPANGU Community in east Guadalcanal plains has commended the Kastom Gaden Association KGA) for providing them basic agriculture training.
KGA conducted a series of trainings in the past weeks for communities in Berande, Balasuna, and Ngalimbiu, who were affected by the April flash floods that hit Guadalcanal and Honiara.
Chief Leon Thugea described the trainings as eye opener for community members.
“The training was actually an eye opener for us all. We have the land and resources here but the knowledge we gained from this training is really a new thing,” Mr Thugea said.
“It provided us with necessary skills on farming to rebuild our lives after the floods.”
He said they depended on their food gardens for survival and as sources of income but these were destroyed during the floods, leaving them with nothing.
“We wish to commend KGA for playing their part in the long rehabilitation process. We hope and believe that what we have learned will not only help us in the rehabilitation process but also re-establish our livelihoods.”
Women leader Hilda Suri described the training as a good start for the community.
“This is a good start for us after the devastating floods destroyed our food gardens,” Mrs Suri said.
She added the training was relevant for mothers in the longer run as they are the ones who spent most of their time in the garden.
The training concluded yesterday with distribution of seedling and root crops to farmers.
