THREE communities in Isabel and Malaita provinces will soon have better water supply and sanitation following the signing of their grant contract with Japanese Embassy yesterday.
The communities are Koghe, Kolofe and Kwaibala.
Under the grant contract Koghe community received SBD$555,000 while Kolofe and Kwaibala community received USD$65,405.00.
The grant contract was signed by Japan Ambassador Kenichi Kimiya, Isabel provincial Health Director Dr Donald Kafa and Chairman of Kolofe and Kwaibala Water Supply and Sanitation Committee Elson Labufunu.
Ambassador Kimiya said the project aims to provide basic water supply system and sanitation facilities for the three communities.
He said one areas of assistance under the grassroots and Human Security Project Scheme in the country is providing basic human needs such as water supply.
“We believe that this project will improve the public health and living environment for the people struggling to access clean water and proper sanitation facility,” Ambassador Kimiya said.
He said the government of Japan is pleased to contribute to the development for the people of the Solomon Islands.
Isabel Health Director Dr Kafa said, that Japan has assisted Isabel a lot in terms of water supply and sanitation that had benefited and improved the living standard of people in the community.
He said, through the improved water supply and sanitations the health services in the province are also improved which resulted in the reduction in the incidence of infectious diseases.
He said, the project is significant for the people of Koghe because it will provide better water supply services, reopen their clinic which was closed due to water problem, improved health status of the community and serve the surrounding settlements.
Chairman of Kolofe and Kwaibala Water Supply Committee Elson Labunu acknowledged the government of Japan for recognising the need of his community.
He said the project will benefit his communities in improving their living standard and have healthy water supply and sanitation.
