AS part of honouring the traditional landowners of Guadalcanal where Honiara – the host of Miss Pacific Island show is located, a chupu ceremony was held early this week.
Monday’s ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including the Premier of Guadalcanal, Hon. Willie Atu, Tourism CEO Mr. Dagnal Dereveke, the Pageant Director Joyce Konofilia, and the reigning Miss Pacific Islands, Moemoana Schwenke.
A chupu is part of the Guadalcanal province to acknowledge, show respect, express gratitude and form connections.
Not only that but to seeking the landowners’ blessings for the use of their land, and fostering unity between guests and hosts.
The ceremony was sponsored by Tourism Solomons.
Tourism Solomons CEO, Mr. Dagnal Derevek, speaking at the ceremony as a proud silver sponsor, highlighted the significance of this traditional ceremony in fostering unity and honoring cultural heritage.

Premier of Guadalcanal Province, Mr. Willie Atu, in his speech at the ceremony, emphasized the importance of this tradition as a symbol of acceptance, unity, and harmony between the host and delegates.
Also present were the Pageant contestants and their support officials, staff from Tourism Solomons, media personnel and the members of the public.
A special highlight of the event was the presentation of the Pataka necklace to each of the delegates – a significant gift from the people of Guadalcanal, symbolizing their warmth, appreciation and the shared spirit of the Pacific.
With this sacred exchange, we step forward into the week ahead with gratitude, respect and excitement.
The journey continues, now blessed with the spirit and traditions of Guadalcanal.
The ceremony was held at the Eastend sports centre dinning hall in King George.
