HONIARA City councillor forVuhokesa Ward Greg Malefo has tendered his resignation as chairman for Trade and Commerce within the Honiara City Council (HCC).
Mr Malefo’s resignation was confirmed by Honiara City Lord Mayor Andrew Mua yesterday.
Mr Mua told Solomon Star that he received Mr Malefo’s resignation letter Monday this week.
He said Mr Malefo’s resignation means the council will now have to find a new chairperson for Trade and Commerce.
Mr Malefo resigned following disagreement over the demolition of market stalls at the Fijian Quarters near the Old Mataniko Bridge, by the HCC law enforcement.
The demolition exercise was done under directives from the Mayor and the city clerk Charles Kelly.
Mr Malefo sympathised with people in his ward and reacted by threatening to resign from the council.
However, Mr Mua refused to adhere to Mr Malefo’s concerns and instead reiterated his stand based on the HCC Act.
Mr Mua said he will not compromise the HCC Act for political strength adding that he would rather honour the HCC ordinance for the sake of proper management and good governance.
