TEACHERS in Malaita Province are questioning the Solomon Islands National Teachers Association (SINTA) Branch in Auki over its decision to forego the provincial celebration of the World Teachers’ Day in the Malaita Provincial Capital this year.
Earlier this month, teachers in Honiara and Guadalcanal jointly marked the occasion with the theme“Valuing Teacher Voices, Towards a New Social Contract for Education.”
eachers in the Western Provincial capital also celebrated this year’s World Teachers’ Day.
World Teachers’ Day honors the dedication, hard work and passion of educators who play a vital role in shaping the minds and futures of children.
Last week, several teachers in Malaita expressed their disappointment over the absence of a provincialcelebration and urged the SINTA Branch in Auki to explain the reason for this.
One teacher, who wished to remain anonymous, lamented the absence of a celebration in a populousprovince as Malaita.
With over a thousand teachers currently working in the province, he believes that SINTA should have supported the organization of a celebration.
“There are many teachers in Malaita who are members of SINTA and they should be recognized on this important day,” the teacher stated.
Having taught for more than 20 years, the teacher added, “The decision not to celebrate World Teachers’ Day in Malaita does not reflect good leadership by the SINTA Branch in our province.
“The SINTA Branch here needs to provide an explanation on its decision to teachers,” the teacher added.
