WESTERN Provincial capital Gizo is facing a threat from a rising number of dengue fever cases being reported at the Gizo Hospital last week.
Director of Western Provincial Health and Medical Services, Dr. Dickson Boara revealed this on Friday during the launch of a partnership deal with Plastic Wise Gizo and Positive Change for Marine Life.
Dr. Boara said according to the latest report from the Gizo Hospital, there were several cases of dengue fever being recorded at the Gizo Hospital.
“Some of the cases are being recorded at the hospital and some around Gizo,” he said.
Because of the imminent threat from dengue, he advises Gizo residents to ensure the surrounding of their homes are kept clean at all times.
He explained due to continuous littering of rubbish like empty tins, plastics and stagnant pool of water this can help to breed mosquitoes.
“This rise in dengue fever is caused by empty tins and cans lying beside the house, poor drainage, tall bushes and weeds near our houses,’’ he said.
He highlighted one of the contributing factors leading to the dengue outbreak and other diseases reflect back to how people keep their surroundings and care for the environment.
Therefore, he appeals to all Gizo residents to be responsible when it comes to cleaning up of their surrounding to avoid breeding sites for mosquitoes.
