FBC SPORTS —The 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Nacanieli Takayawa says Team Fiji should not lose sight of their goals when competing in their various events.
Takayawa departed with the first batch of athletes for the games in Glasgow, Scotland on Tuesday and will serve as an official for Fiji’s lone judoka, Josateki Naulu.
Takayawa says it is important that the athletes not be overwhelmed by the environment and maintain their focus on their goals.
“I think they just have to stay positive, be happy and be focused on what is needed to be done. They just need to stay positive whenever they come into the competition.”
Takayawa won gold in judo at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in England.
Meanwhile, Young weightlifter Seruwaia Malani is looking to make the most of her first Commonwealth Games experience in Scotland later this month.
Malani was one of the stand outs for Fiji at last year’s Pacific Mini Games but the Glasgow Games will present a whole new challenge for the Ovalau lass.
“I know it’s going to be tough. This is my first Commonwealth Games. I will be going there to watch the big lifters, and what sort of techniques they use.”
Malani and her weightlifting team mates will depart for Scotland today, along with the national swimming team.
The Commonwealth Games will begin on July 23rd.
