THE long Easter weekend had seen a number of events being organised as part of enjoying Easter celebration.
This included church programs starting on good Friday and then sports and other social activities starting on Saturday and will continue today
Over the weekend the Tanagai playing ground west of Honiara was packed with sports men and spectators who came out in numbers to watch a seven-a-side soccer knockout.
The competition kicked off Saturday and is expected to end today.
A newly formed football club in West Honiara and Kakabona named “Tandai Eagles’ hosted the event.
About 41 teams from within west Honiara and Kakabona took part in the knockout competition.
A visit to Tanagai yesterday saw many people from west Honiara including some prominent soccer players and business people with their family members came out to watch as part of their Easter celebration.
Speaking to the Solomon Star in Joel Puia Konofilia said, the competition aims to bring people together during the Easter weekend.
“This program is basically organised for West Honiara people and Kakabona to enjoy this Easter.”
He said, many teams and spectators turned up to participate and enjoy watching the competition.
Mr Konofilia, a former national soccer player himself said, the competition will the club to scout for potential players to join the new football club.
“The main aim of this Easter knockout is to select the best players to join our new club that we formed in west Honiara and Kakabona,” Mr Konofilia said.
He acknowledged the huge turn out yesterday.
“I can’t believe the turn out of people starting on Sunday who came to watch and enjoy the game.”
He said most of them came out to watch after fishing off from Church.
At the Multipurpose Hall, volleyball and basketball competition was also staged. A good number of people also turned up to watch.
More sports competition are expected to continue today.
A visit by the Solomon Star team to some parts of Honiara yesterday saw people attending church, going to the beach or relaxing at home with their families.
Reports from the provinces said Easter celebration was peaceful and very enjoyable without major problems.
From Gela, Peter Sagupari told the Solomon Star that celebration there was organised by Anglican community at Toga Village Sand fly area yesterday.
He said a lot of community members from around the villages in Sand-fly attended the celebration and it was peacefully.
In Taro, Managing Director of Green Tourism Solomon Island Ltd who is currently in Taro running a tourism training said, Taro was peaceful and everybody celebrated the Easter peaceful in their homes.
Temotu, Isabel and Western provinces also reported the same peaceful situation.
