THE Western Provincial government has been working closely with stakeholders to address the acute water shortage at provincial capital Gizo.
Premier David Gina revealed this in an exclusive interview with the Solomon Star.
“In the shorter term, we are working with Solomon Water and others to try and source water from the only available stream on the island at Pailoge, west of Gizo,” Gina said.
“In the longer term, we are talking with landowners on the nearby island of Kolombangara to pipe water from their sources across to Gizo,” he added.
He said their consultations with Solomon Water has indicated this may happen in the next two or three years.
Gina said Gizo has been experiencing acute water shortages over the years due to the lack of source on the island.
He said every government that came into office had been confronted with the problem.
Residents of Gizo island depended mostly on the rain for their drinking water.
They used shallow wells to bath and wash.
