AN elderly couple have been arrested at Gilbert Camp settlement in east Honiara on Tuesday for illegally selling Kwaso.
Police Commissioner Matthew Varley on Wednesday at his weekly conference said the couple were arrested after police executed a search warrant at their house on Tuesday afternoon.
“That was an operation targeting the illegal distribution of Kwaso and from that operation the police detained and seized 105 bottles of Kwaso,” Mr Varley said.
“You can imagine though that has a very significant of effect in local communities.
“We are always taking these operations seriously and working to remove Kwaso from community and in this case a husband and wife in their 60’s have been arrested and are being managed by police.
“We are conducting further inquiry.”
Mr Varley said he was told the value of the Kwaso if it was sold was over thousand dollars.
The couple have been investigated and arrested for the offence of illegal sale of Kwaso.
“The point is this is a very dangerous substance that caused a lot of problems in our community.
“The police often received information from community leaders and community groups about the illegal distribution of Kwaso.’
He said just as he said before about taking responsibility for drink and driving on our roads, the community can also help police by taking responsibility for the illegal sale and distribution of Kwaso in passing the information to police.
“As you saw in this case when get that information we take action.
“The 105 bottles of Kwaso seized yesterday (Tuesday) is a good result and it is a reminder that we have to be vigilant against this problem in our community,” Mr Varley said.
