SOLOMON Islands High Commission Mission team in Suva, Fiji on Wednesday morning personally visited and met with the Kurukuru team members at their hotel in Suva.
The visit was conducted by High Commissioner Joseph Ma’ahanua and his staff ahead of the team’s opening clash with New Caledonia on Wednesday night.
The Kurukuru team is in Suva for the Melanesian Futsal Championship which is being played between host Fiji, New Zealand, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands.
In a statement, the country’s envoy said, “took time out with the Mission Team to meet the Solomon Islands Kurukuru boys at their accommodation this morning (Wednesday).”
During the brief visit, his team was able to welcome the team management and players.
He also offered some words of encouragement and urged them to do their best.
“Just a bit of welcome and some words of encouragement as I always do for sports teams visiting Fiji,” he said.
He expressed gratitude with the response from the team, that they have been preparing well for the competition.
“I was pleased with a response of being better conditioned and prepared now, by the most senior of the boys,” he said.
He was also pleased to meet Kurukuru’s new coach.
“I was equally pleased to meet the Kurukuru Boy’s new Head Coach as well.
“All the best Team Kurukurus. Go Kurukuru Go. Go Solo Go,” he said.
Ma’ahanua is expected to join the spectators cheering for the boys during this week’s championship.
Meanwhile, most of the local students and those working in Suva are expected to provide much needed support throughout this week.
After New Caledonia, Kurukuru will take on Vanuatu and Fiji.
Head coach Damon Shaw and captain Elliot Ragomo on Tuesday fronted the media in Fiji ahead of the opening match against New Caledonia last night at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, Fiji.
Skipper Ragomo said the team went through a transition period and will do everything to make the fans happy.
While coach Damon said he is eager to see how the team competes and executes what they have practiced over the past week since his arrival in the country a few weeks ago.
