A GROUP of the now defunct Malaita Eagle Force (MEF) is calling on the Ministry of National Truth and Reconciliation to investigate the disbursement of the rehabilitation funds.
A concerned former MEF member, who wish to speak on anonymity, told Solomon Star that an amount of $49,000 was allegedly misused during the payout in 2014.
The former MEF member was speaking in response to the Minister of Truth and Reconciliation who last week told parliament that the 2014 distribution of rehabilitation funds was a success.
However, the former MEF member said the disbursement of the rehabilitation funds was not successful as described by the minister.
In fact, he said there should be an investigation into the missing $49,000.
“We are more than willing to help the government if they are to carry out an investigation,” the former MEF militant said.
He said he was the officer in charge of the police military operations during the ethnic tension and he knew how the funds were disbursed to the wrong people.
“The ex-militant lied to the ones distributing the funds which should be $1100 per head.
“These very people who distribute the funds have been duped.
“They claim to give them the funds so they will distribute it, but later we learnt that they exhausted the funds remaining for those who missed out the payment,” he said.
He said this is a serious issue because some of those entitled for the rehabilitation funds didn’t received their payment.
“It is a threat to us those who do the payout, since those who didn’t get their shares will be accusing us of the missing portion of fund.
“It should be a police case for investigations,” the ex-MEF member said.
