Fake $50 note discovered, confiscated in Gizo
A FAKE $50 note has been discovered in Gizo, Western Province when a man attempts to make a deposit at the Bank South Pacific (BSP) this week.
Information received from locals who witnessed the incident said the man’s intention was to deposit the cash at BSP Gizo.
“He was walking straight into the bank to deposit some money without knowing the $50.00 note inside the bundle.
“However, he was refused to continue the process when bank officers discovered that the money he was carrying were fake,” one eye-witness who was part of the bank queue said.
The man was later told to leave.
In a packed Gizo town yesterday, the news of the incident quickly spread where local residents and visitors were informed that there is a serious increase of such serious incident in recent times.
They have also warned each other that they must be vigilant at all times.
Some even said, this might be related to the buying of bechedemer from the foreigners and buyers, which eventually led to the use of the fake legal tender notes.
The BSP Branch in Gizo also confirmed that they are aware that fake $50.00 and $100.00 notes have been circulating in Gizo and throughout Western Province.
No report was submitted to the police.
Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI) has continued to inform the public about the fake notes circulating in the communities.
