The Farmers Cup Volleyball competition for women and young girls in the highland of Central Kwaea’ae, Malaita has concluded last week with a prize giving ceremony.
The Farmers Volleyball Competition successfully brought together all the ladies from the Busurata region.
Many of these women and girls involve those who actively engage in farming activities within the Busurata catchment.
The prize-giving ceremony was held at Aitolo Village and was witnessed by players, supporters and villagers.
The Ladoa Black volleyball team took home the first prize receiving a trophy, gold medals and $800 in cash.
The Raven volleyball team secured second place, earning a trophy, silver medals, and $600 in cash.
The Ladoa Blue team settled for the third place walking away with a trophy, bronze medals, and $400 in cash.
The Green Land team was awarded the Fair Play prize and received a cash prize of $300.
Wilfred Abi, Chairman of the Farmers Cup Tournament Committee, expressed his appreciation to all the participating teams.
He said, this will now be an annual event.
He especially thanked Our Telekom for serving as the major sponsor, providing trophies and medals for the tournament.
“The organizing committee wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Our Telekom for its generous support in sponsoring the trophies and medal prizes.”
This event marked the first time a sports tournament has been organized specifically for women and girls in this region.
“The support for the volleyball tournament has significantly impacted our communities and individuals, fostering good partnerships among participants,” he stated.
Additionally, Abi acknowledged local freelance journalist and farmer Lesley Sanga for contributing cash prizes to the event.
The competition had been running for few weeks until its completion.
For men, a soccer competition was held which completed more than a month ago.
