SUVA, (FASANOC) -The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) wants local coaches who are understudying overseas coaches to be paid the same amount as overseas coaches.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports received a total of $16.4m for next year.
Out of the big piece $1.51 million was allocated for the engagement of sports coaches.
“It is good to have overseas coaches in some sports while the other sports they do not need one,” FASANOC president Joe Rodan (Sr) said.
“If one is investing in overseas coaches then the local coaches who are under studying the overseas should also be looked after well.
“Our local coaches are as equally good as overseas coaches and hence they should be given the same amount once the overseas coaches go back.”
The Fiji Rugby Union has roped in the services of Ben Ryan for the Vodafone Fiji 7s team and John McKee for Flying Fijians and Fiji Football Association had given the coaching job to former socceroos player Frank Farina.
Rodan (Sr) said apart from that he was happy with the allocation of the budget.
“The budget was a very good one as far as sports are concerned. They had really recognised us as the team will be participating in the Olympic Games.
“It is a good idea to reward the athletes who win gold medal with $30, 000.
“We have also been given money for the international competition as well as we will be having Oceania Athletics Championship next year in Fiji together with other sports from different federations.”.
