MINISTRY of Finance and Treasury will take the lead in addressing corruption after the country is perceived as very ‘corrupt.’
According to the 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released in February by the Transparency Solomon Islands (TSI), which assesses countries on a scale of 0 to 100, with 0 being highly corrupt and 100 indicating a very clean public sector, the Solomon Islands scored 43 to 100.
This result indicates a worrisome level of corruption, which can have severe implications for the country’s socio-economic development, public trust, and international reputation.
Minister of MoFT, Manasseh Sogavare told media during the press conference of the National Economic Summit at Mendana Hotel on Thursday, that it is a worrying situation.
“For too long we hear about this statistic not driving us towards actions.
“I will direct officials of Ministry of Finance to come up with a report to know exactly which areas this people identified Solomon as corrupt,” he said.
Minister Sogavare said they will look at these areas and Cabinet to suggest the measures to address them.
Sogavare said any country that got such ranking, even if it has good policies but the perception has labelled it as very corrupt.
