Dear Editor – After Second World War on Guadalcanal this chain of scattered islands was declared British Solomon Islands protectorate.
Perhaps we were indeed fortunate from being colonised.
In my simple understanding, colonized is just simply like one of the streets in London developed and looked after.
Solomon Islands history reminds us that traders and black-birding continue to convince and confuse Pacific islanders to surrender their lands in exchange of simple items that Pacific islanders regarded as valuable and important to them.
The British Government setup its administration centre at Tulagi on Gela island, now Central Islands province.
Also Christianity had great challenge to inject and influence God’s world to convert all souls into the light of Christianity.
Some bright boys were sent to Pawa School on Ugi Island Makira Ulawa province, while others went to New Zealand and Norfolk Island for further education in order to become our future leaders in the government and churches.
Thank God for the first chapter in Solomon Islands history to become what we are, and who we are today.
Those who served under British Solomon islands protectorate had something to learn and could pass on to those in leadership roles and responsibilities more especially on discipline and time management, which is lacking in the public service.
Others in the essential services must fulfill the obligation of what the public is required of them.
Solomon Islands attaining political independence from Great Britain on 7th July 1978 does not really mean we have to localize our ways of thinking and doing things the way we like.
There were standing orders that must be adhered to in all government offices and private sectors and we have to work extra harder to manage our political destiny all well and good.
Solomon Islands is a country of its own as it has it all in some provinces on lands and national international infrastructures.
All provinces, including Honiara city, must improve on socio-economic development, peace and national security at all costs.
Congratulations!
Academics this is your country being architect by the past leaders and continue to rule with care and love to all God’s creations.
God bless Solomon islands from shore to shore.
Matt Waifo
