FIVE fishermen escaped a possible arrest when Tulagi police were tipped that the men were using illegal explosive – dynamite.
Tulagi Provincial Police Commander Fred Satu said the men were conducting the illegal fishing at Voloa coral reefs in Gela, Central Islands Province on Tuesday morning.
Mr Satu said upon receiving reports from villagers in the area, police were dispatched to investigate.
“The team arrived but the men already escaped.”
Mr Satu said according to the villagers, the fishermen were from Honiara.
He said dynamite fishing is dangerous and illegal.
“This is a bad practise that police have been very vocal about.”
He appealed to communities to continue to work together with police and report any sightings of dynamite fishing.
He reiterated the strong call for fishermen to discouraged using dynamite explosive for fishing.
