FIVE communities in Areo, Ward 3 of West Kwara’ae, Malaita Province, have come together to repair their deteriorating road.
The one-kilometer stretch had worsened over time, leading to the suspension of bus services to the provincial capital, Auki. As a result, residents were forced to walk the distance to reach town.
Rather than waiting for outside assistance, families from Gwaiako, Faubora, Laugwata, Tehila, Sasale, Buiano, Adi Adi, Fauabu, and Areo each contributed $10 towards the road’s rehabilitation.
Local farmer Fabiano Ngenegmani told Solomon Star that the poor road conditions had made it difficult for him to transport his produce to market. This, he said, was one of the main reasons the communities took matters into their own hands.
Using the funds raised, they hired a dump truck to transport gravel and cover the worst sections of the road.
Community leader Stephen Bua acknowledged the $2,000 contribution from the Ward 3 Development Committee, which helped with truck hire costs. He also expressed gratitude to individuals who participated in the fundraising efforts to make the roadwork possible.
“We are open to working with government leaders to address the needs of our community and improve essential services,” Mr. Bua stated.
