GOVERNMENT through the Ministry of Forestry and Research, Utilisation Department had successfully completed a one day sustainable forestry management awareness in Visale area, Northwest Guadacalanal on Tuesday.
John Toki from the area reported that more than 20 participants from Guadalcanal and Honiara participated in the training.
“This awareness is to educate our resource owners that there is a need to use sustainable forestry harvesting method to preserve trees for the next generations,” Mr Toki reported.
Director Julius Houria said its the aim of the ministry for people to use sustainable harvesting method and not mass logging that will spoil the land and forest.
It is good that people should use saw-mill to saw timbers and sell them rather than using heavy machines that will destroy the whole forest area and bush land, he said.
Mr Toki said that it was an enjoyable awareness that the participants were happy to learn about sustainable harvesting of their forest.
He added that this awareness is very important and the ministry should conduct similar awareness to other parts of the country.
Mr Houria also highlighted plans for a nation-wide awareness program.
“After this we will go to Kirakira and down to Western provinces.”
He added that they have done the awareness in Malaita already.
The awareness program is being made possible through funds by the Australian Aid PHAMA program.
