A FORMER RAMSI Special Coordinator has died on Tuesday while serving abroad as an Australian High Commissioner.
RAMSI’s Office of the Special Coordinator announced the death of Graeme Wilson on Thursday.
The late Graeme Wilson was the Australian High Commissioner to South Africa when he died peacefully at his residence in Pretoria on 2 September 2014 after a short illness.
He served as the Special Coordinator for RAMSI from 2009 – 2011.
During his long and distinguished career in Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Graeme also served in France, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Mexico.
The Acting Special Coordinator of RAMSI Richard Griffith said:
“This is a sad time for all members of RAMSI. Graeme is fondly remembered by RAMSI personnelforhis commitment and contribution to the Missionin his two years as Special Coordinator.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Graeme’s family at this very sad time.”
He said as well as being a fine diplomat, Mr Wilson wasa keen sportsman and during his time in the Solomon Islands was instrumental in introducing Australian Rules football to the country.
He was the coach of the first Solomon Islands team that took part in the Australian Rules football under-16 Pacific competitions in Tonga in 2010.
Mr Wilson was also behind the revival of cricket in the Solomon Islands.
