THE Western Provincial capital, Gizo, is currently grappling with a substantial hike in fuel prices.
The cost of pure petrol has soared to an unprecedented $15 per litre, significantly surpassing the previous average price of $11 per litre.
The sudden increase in fuel prices few months ago has sent shockwaves through the local transportation industry, impacting taxi drivers and boat operators
Faced with limited alternatives, transport service operators are compelled to purchase fuel at the inflated prices in order to continue their operations.
However, many individuals have resorted to seeking more affordable options, with some even undertaking journeys to Noro township where fuel prices remain comparatively cheaper.
The price disparity has prompted residents and businesses in Gizo to travel to Noro, despite the additional time and expenses involved, to purchase fuel at a more reasonable rate.
The rising cost of fuel has sparked concerns and frustration amongst residents and businesses in Gizo.
Local taxi drivers in Gizo, who heavily rely on fuel for their livelihood, are experiencing a serious financial strain as they struggle to absorb the increased costs.
“Additionally, boat operators with OBM engines are faced with similar challenges, jeopardising their ability to provide essential services.
“While the precise factors contributing to the fuel price hike in Gizo remain unclear, industry experts suggest a combination of global market trends, transportation logistics, and local economic conditions may be influencing the surge,’’ A boat skipper from Rannogah said.
It is also unclear whether authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are exploring measures to alleviate the burden on residents and mitigate its impact on the local economy.
