THE National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands (NOCSI) has released the Commonwealth Games 2018 contingent, which will be representing the country in Gold Coast, Australia.
A total of 14 athletes have been selected and will compete in six sports at the 2018 Commonwealth Games namely, Athletics, Weightlifting, Boxing, Table Tennis, Triathlon, and Swimming.
Eleven officials, consisting NOCSI members and National Federation coaches will be accompanying the athletes.
NOCSI President Martin Rara confirmed to Star Sports that the delegation will be leaving on the 25th of this month.
“We will be leaving at least a week before the games proper kicks off,” he said.
Mr Rara added NOCSI appreciates the Commonwealth Games as one of the biggest event for the country.
Therefore, they are sending the best crop of athletes from 6 National Federations to the games.
“The encouraging thing for us in the Commonwealth Games is to see our athletes qualifying in merit,” he said.
The NOCSI President said, the only latest inclusion is David Gorosi, who will be joining Weightlifters, Jenly Wini and Mary Kini.
“We have just received confirmation by the Commonwealth Games Committee, that David Gorosi is eligible on merit, to compete in the Games,” said Mr Rara.
Five coaches will also be part of the delegation, excluding Weightlifting. Star Sports was informed that NOCSI’s Administration Officer Francis Manioru will be the team leader.
Manioru will be leaving with the athletes and coaches on the 25th of March, while the President and the remaining officials will be travelling later on April 3rd.
The Commonwealth Games will be staged from the 3rd to 5th of April, 2018.
