Residents of Afio station in Small Malaita are calling on responsible authorities to quickly address the presence of the African giant snails in the area.
Crossen Wate told the Solomon Star that the bio agriculture officer there confirmed that theyfound few the snailscrawling around heavy-duty machineries recently brought to the station.
Wate said the snails arrived with the machineries the Small Malaita Constituency Office brought to construct road in the area.
He said that machineries landed atAfio last week.
“We want authorities to quickly address the snails otherwise they will spread and spoil our gardens and crops,” Wate said.
He said they are worried that if the snails spread out, villagers will be in big trouble.
He said that they will confine the machineries at Afio until authorities arrive and do something about the snails.
“We wonder whether our agriculture people are still doing their job. If so, why don’t they check these machineries before allowing them to be shipped over to Afio.
“We also want the constituency office to take responsibility for this.”
Comments are being sought from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Small Malaita Constituency Office.
