WESTERN Province premier David Gina has condemned the killing of a 39-year-old mother of five at a logging camp in the Roviana Lagoon, Sunday.
The woman’s husband, who is from East Kwaio in Malaita, has been charged with her murder.
“No man or woman has the right to take away the life of another,” Gina said in a statement yesterday.
He calls for a customary compensation to be conducted between the two parties.
Gina also urged the two MPs for Kwaio to take the initiative of organising the compensation ceremony.
“It is important that this must be carried out in the midst of police playing their part like an arrest and subsequent charges which had already been laid early this week,” the premier said.
“It is imperative that we do revisit our good traditional practices, exercise them in the spirit of reconciliation and forgiveness, by doing so we can continue to uphold and respect our customs and resolve matters that are truly binding and is from the heart,” he added.
Police arrested the husband while trying to board a ship at Ugele port in Western Province back to Honiara, Monday this week.
He was taken to Gizo police station where he was remanded.
Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Western Province, Inspector Justina Fono has appealed to both parties to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and allow police to investigate the matter.
She also thanked the people of Ugele for helping police to arrest the husband.
