A NINE year old girl has died after she was cut with an axe following an alleged attempted rape incident at Arao village in North Malaita over the weekend.
Auki police said that the suspect, a man aged between 25-30 years old had been arrested and was now in police custody.
The incident had shocked the community.
Police said, the suspect was allegedly attempted to rape the nine-year old girl last Saturday and cut her head with an axe when she resisted his attack.
Police alleged after seriously injuring the little girl on her head, the suspect then threw her body into the sea.
Police said, Arao villagers later discovered the little girl floating and fighting for her life.
She was rushed to Kilu’ufi hospital where she was admitted but died early Sunday morning.
Auki Police said, the suspect is being held in custody for questioning in their investigation over the incident.
