THE Gizo Market in the Western Provincial Capital is undergoing a significant facelift as part of ongoing efforts to enhance its appearance and create a more welcoming environment for vendors, customers and visitors alike.
As part of the beautification initiative, palm trees have been planted around the market compound, adding a touch of greenery and improving the overall aesthetic appeal.
Thanks to the Gizo Market Manager Moffat Maeta who initiated the creative idea.
Speaking to Solomon Star in an interview, Mr Maeta said he bought the palm trees in Honiara and took them to his area in the Outback Living.
He said when thinking of a sustainable way and thinking green, he noticed that the bigger trees planted decades ago along the Gizo market will soon be pruned and eventually cut down.
“And the best way to plant those palm trees is to beautify the appearance of the Gizo Market.
“In fact, this is a plan by Gizo Market Vendors Association (GMVA). However, things did not turn out well so we the Market management carried out the planting of the small palm trees,” Mr Maeta said.
Mr Maeta said by doing this, the provincial government divisional offices will follow suit, creating a friendly and beautiful eco-environment.
Gizo Town Clerk Charles Kelly expressed optimism about the project, saying the facelift and planting of palm trees will not only beautify the market, but also encourage a sense of pride and care amongst market users.
“The facelift efforts aligned with broader development plans are aimed at improving public spaces across Gizo,” Mr Kelly said.
Local vendors and Gizo residents have welcomed the changes, saying the market’s improved appearance could attract more customers and boost local economic activity.
The community is encouraged to support the initiative by maintaining the cleanliness of the market and taking pride in the enhanced environment.
