Police in Western Province are well-positioned to respond to any election relation violence, commander George Guna told the Sunday Star.
His assurance came as the nation prepares to go to the polls on Wednesday.
Guna, who recently took up the commander’s job, said traditionally constituencies in South Vella La Vella, Shortlands and others parts in New Georgia normally experienced troubles during elections.
However, Guna said his officers are prepared to respond to such violence to make sure a free and fair election for all.
“During the elections, police officers will be on the ground to man the polling booths,” he said.
“Police Response Unit from Honiara will join police in Western Province to station in Gizo and Noro,” he said.
Guna said the Police Response Team will be used as back up to respond to any violence that may arise during polling day.
He said a police boat will also visit places where no police officers are there to make their presence felt.
“We have a fast craft standby and RAMSI boat to do monitoring during the elections.”
However, Guna said carrying out police operation in Western Province is quite challenging because of its scatteredness
Despite that, he said they will try their best to maintain the law and order through-out the elections.
Guna said Police understand during counting and announcement of results always resulted in trouble because supporters normally lose their temper.
At this stage, he said the situation is relatively peaceful with no reports of any trouble.
