THE Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT), under the leadership of Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele will put forward the name of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Maringe-Kokota Cathy Nori as its candidate for Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament.
The Deputy Speaker’s post became vacant following the appointment of the former holder, the MP for North West Guadalcanal, Francis Sade as Minister for Public Service. MP Safe was sworn as the Minister for Public Service last Saturday following the resignation of the MP for Renbel, John Tuhaika Jr from the ministerial portfolio and from GNUT.
MP Nori is one of the three women parliamentarians in the 12th Parliament. She currently serves as the Deputy Chair to Caucus. Her nomination to the Deputy Speaker position will make her the first woman to hold this esteemed role.
MP Nori is also the first female to take on the role of Deputy Chair to Caucus.
Her elevation to these leadership roles affirms GNUT’s commitment to gender-balance in leadership and shared responsibility.
The two other female MPs also hold ministerial portfolios.
Choylin Yim Douglas, who is the MP for Ngella Constituency, is the Minister for Culture and Tourism and Freda Rotutafi Rangirei, who is the MP for Temotu VATU is the Minister for Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs.
