Police say the security situation at Gold Ridge mine site in central Guadalcanal is now stable.
That’s according to Acting Assistant Commissioner National Capital, Gabriel Manelusi.
The law and order problem at the site since last week has forced St. Barbara, owner and operator of the mine, to evacuate its expatriate workers.
The workers have since left Honiara.
Manelusi said the security situation is stable after the highly-trained Police Response Team (PRT) took control of the mine site.
“I appeal to those live around and on the mine site to respect the properties of the company that were left behind,” Manelusi said.
He said police met with the landowners on Friday and they agree to work together to maintain law and order at the site.
“Landowners it is high time for you to translate the information of what had been raised during the meeting with the police to your good people.
“I appeal to all of you to value yourself and work together with the police,” he said
Manelusi said 10 people have been arrested in relation to the problems.
Meanwhile, the national government and St. Barbara are in talks over the future of the mine.
Operations at the mine site have been suspended since April 4.
