SOLOMON Islands has established diplomatic relations with Pakistan last Friday.
Foreign Affairs and External Trade minister Milner Tozaka and Pakistan’s High Commissioner designate to Solomon Islands, Naela Chohan signed the Communiqué in Honiara to formalise the ties.
“It is with great enthusiasm that I sign this agreement between our two nations, an enthusiasm that comes with high expectation for strengthened and proactive cooperation between our two nations,” Mr Tozaka said.
He said the government believes that there are opportunities that both nations can benefit from diplomatically if more time and effort is put into exploring and identifying areas of cooperation.
Mr Tozaka encouraged the Pakistani envoy to work closely with the Solomon Islands Government in fostering greater cooperation for development amongst the two states.
“It is my desire, that as we move forward in an era of many challenges, that we develop stronger ties and cooperation for the wellbeing of our people,” he said.
Solomon Islands has a liberal foreign policy that holds respect for all countries and religions.
This approach will help foster development aspirations and peace in the country.
Meanwhile, Mrs Naela Chohan has welcomed the new relationship describing it as a “great step forward” for friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
She said Pakistan has deeply appreciated the measures that the Solomon Islands Government has taken in its social and economic development, human rights and women’s empowerment.
“We here and are ready to support you,” Mrs Chohan said while highlighting Pakistan’s willingness to assist Solomon Islands in terms of education opportunities and policing programs.
