GOVERNMENT through Cabinet has endorsed a fourth (4th) Solomon Islands National University (SINU)Campus to be established in Malaita.
This was announced by Prime Minister (PM) Jeremiah Manele in Auki during Malaita Province’s 41st Second Appointed Day anniversary on Thursday.
He also used the time to appeal for closer collaboration between the country’s development partners and the national government in supporting the project.
During the occasion a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the proposed project’s implementation was signed.
It was also witnessed by Malaitans who gathered in numbers.
The MoU was signed between the Vice Chancellor of SINU Dr Transform Aqorau and Malaita Premier Elijah Asilaua as PM Manele and his Cabinet Ministers stood in jubilation.
This development marked a historic achievement for Malaita Province as it is the first province to host a SINU campus.
The day before the MoU signing, Dr Aqorau and his team visited the Aligegeo Provincial Secondary School.
PM Manele in his speech expressed gratitude to the SINU Vice Chancellor for his vision on education.
The PM endorsed Dr Aqorau’s sentiments on the significance of the fourth campus in Malaita, which is the provision of access to tertiary education not only to Malaitans but to all other Solomon Islanders.
“The power of knowledge and education cannot be underestimated,” he said and went on to quote the late South African President Nelson Mandela who stated that, “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change our communities.”
The three existing SINU campuses are the Kukum Campus and Panatina Campus in Honiara and Poitete Campus in the Western Province.
