Dear Editor – I write with regards to the above issue. At the end of each semester this issue of students failing their course is always a matter being discussed and raised in the social media and the mass media.
It____s a sad case indeed.
However, I have noted that in most cases students studying at the University of the South Pacific (USP) have always been the subject of having their scholarship being terminated for failing their courses.
I know there are other government funded students studying in other institutions in Fiji like Fiji National University (FNU) and Fulton which are also under government scholarship.
But I hardly heard students from these institutions being terminated at the end of each semester.
I’m told some of them have also failed their courses, yet, they continue to enjoy their studies or return the next semester under full scholarship.
There are also students who are only doing one or two courses which is not right.
I would like the National Training Unit (NTU) to be fair as well.
The Education Attache in Fiji should monitor all the government students and penalized those who failed most of their courses.
We should not only pick on USP students who fail each semester.
This year, we have more govt funded students at USP which have their scholarships being terminated.
I believe that____s the result of students acquiring scholarship without going through the right process.
I hope NTU would step up its monitoring policy to ensure all government funded students studying in all institutions in Fiji or even PNG perform well, failure to do so means, their scholarship should be stripped off.
The next thing is catch the next flight home.
I hope NTU will take note of this.
