COMMUNITY leaders in East Kwaio, Malaita Province, are calling on the national government and the Civil Aviation Authority to address issues with the Atoifi airstrip, which has been closed to flights due to safety concerns.
Solomon Airlines recently suspended its flights to Atoifi airstrip, citing the runway’s failure to meet minimum safety standards.
The suspension has had a significant impact on the local community, disrupting essential services such as the transportation of medical supplies, emergency medical referrals and banking services.
The closure is particularly troubling as it coincides with the upcoming school holidays and the busy Christmas season, when air travel is in high demand.
Reports reaching Solomon Star said, local leaders are particularly concerned about the effect this disruption will have on the Atoifi Hospital, which relies heavily on air transportation to receive medical equipment, drugs and other vital supplies due to the poor condition of the road from Auki to East Malaita.
A spokesperson for Solomon Airlines confirmed yesterday that flights to Atoifi will remain suspended until the runway issue is addressed.
The airline stated that services would only resume once the necessary repairs are made and the runway meets safety requirements.
A community leader, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed frustration over the lack of clarity regarding who is responsible for resolving the runway issue and when it will be fixed.
“The closure of flights to Atoifi Airport has severely affected our access to essential services.
“We need urgent action and clear communication from our national leaders about how and when this situation will be resolved,” the leader said.
Another community elder added, “We understand that safety is a priority, but we cannot ignore the critical needs of our community. This airport is our lifeline, and we are ready to assist in any way we can to restore normalcy to our travel and transportation services.”
Despite the challenges, residents remain hopeful that their concerns will be heard and that the government will take swift action to ensure that Atoifi Airport is safe and accessible once again.
