The people of Guadalcanal are no longer silent about the long delay in tabling the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) report in parliament.
The Guadalcanal Provincial Government (GPG) and its people came up with nine resolutions in total in their recent Guadalcanal Leaders’ Forum with resolution number seven specifically calling on the government of the day to table the long awaited TRC report in parliament.
GPG and its people wanted the TRC report to be tabled in parliament and implemented accordingly.
Resolution number seven reads, “Demand that the Truth and Reconciliation (TRC Report) be tabled in Parliament and implemented.
In an effort to promote unity in the country following the civil conflict that brought the country to its knees from 1998-2003, a Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established in 2008, five year after the civil war.
History has it that the TRC was launched by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 2008 and was operational in the next two years 2009 and 2010.
During Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilio in office, the commission in February of 2012 handed five volumes of the report. Since then the report has not been tabled in parliament to this day.
The delay in tabling of the report has resulted in Bishop Terry Brown releasing an electronic copy of the TRC report a year later in 2013 unofficially.
The unofficial releasing of the report was triggered by frustration over the delay to table the report in parliament.
Today the TRC report is reportedly collecting dust in the government shelves still waiting for the day that the report will finally make it to Parliaments for deliberation.
