SINCE the election of the new Gizo Rugby Association (GRA) Executive in the Western Province, one of their priorities is to promote rugby in schools.
Newly elected GRA President, Wesley Kuitai, told Star Sports one of the activities that they embarked on since the election of his executive is the introduction of the sport to schools in and around Gizo township
He said more than a week ago, students of Titiana Community High School which is situated in the western end of Gizo Island were introduced to the basic principles of rugby.
The Renbel man said a lot of students from the school and youths from the Titiana community came out to be part of the promotional programme.
“And they have been excited to be part of the rugby introductory sessions.”
Following the introductory sessions, a team was formed in the Titiana community and it participated in the Independence Anniversary rugby competition in Gizo last Friday.
Mr Kuitai said the next school that will benefit from such visit is Ngari School which is located in western end of the island.
The next school to visit after Ngari School is the Gizo Community High School.
The aim of the school rugby rollout programme is to introduce the sport to young men and women.
Mr Kutai said GRA still needs support to rollout its school rugby programme.
He is hoping SIRUF will assist the association soon.
