THE Solomon Islands National University’s (SINU) 2024 graduates have been urged to carry with them the knowledge that they are the stewards of the nation’s future and the architects of a brighter tomorrow.
The call came from none other than the Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Transform Aqorau in his address at the 11th SINU graduation at the Maranatha Hall on Thursday.
Nearly 1,000 students graduated from various faculties with Certificates, Diplomas, Bachelors’ Degree and for the first ever a PhD Degree.
“Education is the cornerstone upon which the aspirations of individuals and the destiny of nations are built. It is a lifelong journey that does not end with the attainment of a degree but begins anew each day.
“As Nelson Mandela said ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’ In your hands, this weapon becomes an instrument of change, a catalyst for innovation, and a torch of leadership.
“The knowledge you have acquired here is the foundation upon which you will construct your future. It is not merely a tool but a powerful force that empowers you to contribute meaningfully to your communities and to leave an indelible mark on the world.”
“As you step out into the world, carry with you the knowledge that you are not just graduates- you are the stewards of our nation’s future – the architects of a brighter tomorrow.”
Dr Aqorau said as SINU took a moment to celebrate the significant achievement within its diverse graduating class by extending a heartfelt congratulations to Ni-Vanuatu graduate in the Bachelor of Nursing Acute Care.
He said their achievement was not only a testament to their dedication and hard work but also a reflection of the spirit of unity and collaboration that transcends borders.
“You have shown incredible perseverance and commitment to your studies, and your success will undoubtedly make a profound impact on the healthcare landscape of both your home country and the wider pacific region.
“We are proud to have been part of your academic journey, and we look forward to seeing the remarkable contributions you will make in the field of nursing. Congratulations on this well-deserved accomplishment.”
Dr Aqorau also hailed this year’s graduation ceremony as historic because SINU conferred its very first PhD degree and emphasized that this milestone was not just a personal triumph for the graduate, but a landmark in our university’s evolution.
“It is a powerful reminder that with determination and hard work, we can reach new heights. To our PhD graduate, your achievements are a beacon of hope, lighting the way for others in our nation,” he added.
Turning focus on all graduates, the SINU VC said, “as graduates you stand at the threshold of a new era, where the future is a canvas waiting for your brushstrokes.
“The knowledge and skills you have honed within these walls are the tools which you will carve out the future-not only for yourselves but for your communities and our nation. But with these tools comes a profound responsibility.
“It is not enough to wield knowledge for personal gain; true leadership demands that you use your education to uplift, inspire and drive meaningful change.
“The world that you will step into is one of rapid transformation, a world that hungers for new ideas and bold solutions.
“In this world, you must be more than just participants- you must be the architects of progress, the torchbearers of a brighter tomorrow. Remember, your work has the power to shape the destiny of our nation. Do not be afraid to challenge the status quo, to innovate, and to lead with integrity.
“Today, as we honor your achievements, we also celebrate the journey of Solomon Islands National University. Our commitment to excellence is steadfast. We will continue to nurture innovation, expand the horizons of knowledge, and ensure that SINU remains a pillar of education for generations to come. Together, we are building a legacy that will shape the future of our nation.”
The first SINU PhD graduate is Mary Tahu Paia. A Ni-Vanuatu student was also amongst the 2024 graduates. This Ni-Vanuatu student graduated with a Bachelot of Nursing – Acute Care.
Guests and the family and friends of the SINU community turned out in numbers to witness this occasion.
