On Tuesday, 28th January 2025, an incident occurred at the Gold Ridge Mining Limited (GRML) mine site in Central Guadalcanal involving a local employee who was caught stealing.
During an interrogation by two expatriate security guards employed by GRML, allegations arose that excessive force was used to extract information about other suspects.
The use of force triggered retaliation from the suspect’s relatives [workers]. Company security and the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) intervened and managed to bring the situation under control.
However, later that night, a second retaliation occurred, leading to looting involving angry relatives, other workers, and even outsiders.
During this confrontation, one of the expatriate security guards employed by GRML reportedly retaliated using a knife, causing a minor laceration on a local worker.
The RSIPF responded, taking both suspects into custody at Henderson Police Station for formal charges. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and further arrests are expected.
Company immediate actions
In response to the incident, GRML has made the following decisions:
- Termination of the local worker and other suspects involved in the stealing incident.
- Termination of the two expatriate security guards employed by GRML for breaching company security protocols.
- Full cooperation with the RSIPF to allow police investigations and legal proceedings to take their course.
Customary Reconciliation & Workplace Reminder
Recognizing and respecting the customs and traditions of the local community, GRML conducted a customary reconciliation ceremony on Wednesday 29th January 2025 at the Mine site to help restore peace.
As part of this process, two chupus were presented to the victims, symbolizing the company’s commitment to reconciliation and unity.
During the occasion, Company Executive reminded workers of the importance of respecting company property and adhering to company policies and legal processes rather than resorting to retaliation.
Current Situation
GRML acknowledges the concerns of all parties involved and remains committed to maintaining a safe and respectful working environment for both local and expatriate employees.
The situation is now under control, and relations between local and expatriate workers remain intact.
As a company partly owned by Gold Ridge landowners (10% equity share), GRML prioritizes stability and collaboration in its operations.
Currently, GRML employs over 600 local workers across various departments, making it the largest mining employer in the country.
GRML encourages all employees to focus on their work, respect company policies, and allow the legal system to address the matter accordingly.
