GUADALCANAL province has been crowned the 2016 Solomon Games overall winner at the official closing of the event on Sunday.
The result had brought much joy to the Guadalcanal Province Premier Anthony Veke who was overwhelmed with his provincial team for their overall performance throughout the two-week event.
In an interview, he told Star Sport that he was proud of his sports men and women for flying the provincial flag high and were able to scoop the overall prize for the fourth time since the Solomon Games existed.
“I want to thank everyone who contributed towards this win and indeed I want to congratulate them for their success,” Veke said.
Premier Veke said he will continue to work together with the sports people in the province to continue to maintain this winning momentum and defend the title in the next Solomon games in 2018.
“What you have seen today is a clear example of determination of each player to compete in whatever game he/she competed in.
“Thank you everyone for this great reward. You have made the province proud of you.
“I am proud of the result and I’m looking forward for Guadalcanal to defend the title during the 2018 Solomon Games that will be hosted in Renbell/Bellona province.”
Team Guadalcanal has scooped the overall title after grabbing 100 medals in this year’s competition.
In athletics, they also grabbed the overall prize for snatching 51 medals.
Malaita was second with 85 medals and followed by Honiara city with 80 medals.
