Dear Editor – The Guadalcanal Province Culture and Tourism division has put in place a working committee into organising the Weaving Festival program which will commence soon.
Whilst I acknowledge the division____s vision to realising the importance of reviving and promoting our culture and tradition in this way, I strongly question the administration part of this program.
By this, I question the selection of individual personnel who involved or engaged in the administration and formal organising of activities.
There appears to be every time round same people are always earmarked for such programs.
Why____s that? Where is equality here? Why not share the opportunity to other individuals who also have the skills, potential and background of organising an important event such as this one?
I have information from reliable sources that women were in the making up of the organising committee.
This has reminded me of the Premier Anthony Veke____s remarks on Statehood, where he so eloquently uttered the need to utilise institutional resources – increase on education fund for this matter for the betterment of our human resources as a start up to educate more Guadalcanal people into preparing Guadalcanal province in affirming its readiness to be a self governing state.
Where____s the wisdom here? Nothing! What a fluff! The Premier____s remark was not adhered to in this regard. UMI TAKE ADVANTAGE NOMOA LO KAEN IA?
Records have proved that these same people previously engaged in organising such events have misappropriated funds which the public at large raised genuine complaints regarding such unacceptable behaviour, to date nothing was investigated and the call of our people have fallen on deaf ears.
This kind of attitude is what I termed as an opportune seasonal occasion for a gain of a few.
This brings to mind the same question alluded to earlier, are these people the only experts on Guadalcanal?
Why can____t a proper selection be made?
Population data have shown that Guadalcanal province has around a population of more than 100,000 people and so, my proposition is that there are more better and capable people out there than these mere four or five individuals who have been earmarked all time and every time.
This is ridiculous and call for a proper check and balance method be made soon after the completion of the event.
Therefore, and again, my proposition would be for an auditing of the expenditure of all expenses used for the program is done no later than immediately within two weeks after the completion of the program.
This is an important component of transparency and accountability – the hallmark of democracy in any society if you like.
In closing, let me again reiterate the need for responsible authorities, in this case the division of Culture and Tourism, to consider proper methods of selecting right people undertaking a bigger responsibility in organising such an important event.
My word of caution: Let not this event a gain for a few.
