MEMBERS of Gwaunaru’u community, Central Kwara’ae have welcomed the first Solomon Airlines flight to the airport again after the airport’s long closure.
Provincial Minister for Lands Martin Fini said the flight landed at around 12 midday.
“Although it was not a passenger service flight, it was the initial flight after the airport’s closure, sent purposely to examine Gwaunaru’u and Manaoba airports.
“The Twin Otter plane spent some 20 minutes at Gwaunaru’u.”
Mr Fini said Solomon airlines will then have 30 days to reset its office in Auki and hopefully normal passenger flights can resume then.
He said Gwaunaru’u community members are happy to see the progress and planes landing back at the airport.
The airfield was closed on 12 November 2013 after the community claimed that the Ministry of Aviation PS and landowners breached the MOU by awarding contractual maintenance work to certain groups.
