The Embassy of Japan in Honiara on Tuesday handover a total of US$85,748 (SBD$635,392.68) to the Honiara City Council (HCC) for the construction of a new Ranadi landfill administration and training centre.
The proposal was submitted to Japan Embassy March this year.
The handing over of the cheque was conducted by Ambassador of Japan in Honiara Kenichi Kimiya to Honiara City Council (HCC) City Clerk Charles Kelly.
It was witnessed HCC Chief Health Inspector George Titiulu, Works Manager John Labu and the media officials at Japan Embassy office.
Speaking during the handing over of the cheque yesterday, Japan ambassador Kenichi Kimiya had congratulated the official approval of the project for the construction of the Ranadi landfill administration and training centre which HCC submitted to Japan office in Honiara March this year.
Mr Kimiya said the aim of the project is to construct an administration and training office building for Ranadi dump site to improve the working environment for landfill staff and raise the awareness of importance of waste management through the training course.
“One of the priority areas of our assistance under the Grassroots and Human Security Scheme is to support the basic human needs for the people living in Honiara city through providing better hygienic environment and improvement of public service such as collection of general waste.
“On behalf of Japanese government and people of Japan, I would like to take this opportunity to emphasise that we are pleased to contribute to the development of the people of Solomon islands.
