Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (MET) has issued its first heavy raining warning this afternoon.
In a statement issued at 5pm, the weather office said, “heavy rain warning number one issued by the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service at 5pm this afternoon on Saturday, 28th December 2024.”
The heavy raining warning is current for most of the provinces nation-wide.
The Met office said, a trough lies over the Solomon Islands which leads to change in the weather pattern.
As a result, associated clouds and heavy rain with thunderstorms are expected to affect most provinces.
The weather office said, such localised heavy rain may lead to possible landslide and flash flooding over communities living in near hill slopes, close ot large rivers, streams and low-lying areas
Sea travellers are urged to consider safety actions as such heavy rain can reduce visibility.
“People are therefore strongly advised to take safety measures to avoid danger and loss of lives,” the statement said.
Next update will be issued on Sunday morning, 7am.
The weather office on Friday also issued a statement for the cancellation of strong wind warning for the Renbel, Makira and Temotu.
The country is now within the cyclone period and the public have been reminded to take extra care and listen to advisory from the responsible authorities.
