Now that the 2021 festive session is over, hundreds of Malaitans who spent their festive session in Malaita are now starting to move back to Honiara resulting in high demand for ships in Auki and other parts of the province.
Since the beginning of 2022 over the weekend, ships operating the Auki-Honiara route have been filled to maximum capacity with passengers traveling back to the capital city.
On Tuesday morning ships left Auki wharf early to avoid overloading resulting in some passengers being left behind waiting for the next possible trip to Honiara this week.
Shipping vessels servicing the Auki-Honiara route this January are expected to be filled to maximum capacity as hundreds of Malaitans are making their way back to the city.
As witnessed in Auki since the weekend, truckloads of passengers from South road, North road, East road, and Busurata road intending to travel back to Honiara flooded Auki.
While some have already made it to Honiara, some are still waiting for the next ship to travel to Honiara.
The Auki- Honiara route is regarded as the second busiest route in the country besides Honiara wharf, a reflection of the movement of the huge population of Malaita Province to Honiara and elsewhere.
Apart from shipping services, the demand for airline services is also high during this peak period.
