Huawei has been commended for its contributions to digital development in the Solomon Islands and across the wider Pacific region.
Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele, MP, has expressed his profound gratitude when delivering remarks at an appreciation dinner hosted by Huawei in Honiara on Tuesday evening, 29 April 2025.
During the occasion Prime Minister Manele highlighted the company’s strong commitment to building digital connectivity and technological resilience in the region.
He acknowledged Huawei’s sponsorship and active participation in the 29th Annual General Meeting, Business Forum, and Expo of the Pacific Islands Telecommunication Association (PITA), noting that their involvement represents a deeper investment in regional progress.
The Prime Minister referenced the Lagatoi Declaration, a regional framework endorsed by twelve Pacific ICT and Telecommunications Ministers in 2023.
The Declaration outlines a collective commitment by Pacific nations to prioritize digital transformation by advancing six strategic pillars:
- Digital Transformation
- Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship
- Digital Infrastructure
- Digital Security and Trust
- Digital Capacity Building and Skill Development
- Regional Cooperation and Representation

The Lagatoi Declaration serves as a roadmap for accelerating digital progress in the Pacific, fostering collaboration, and ensuring that no island nation is left behind in the digital era.
Prime Minister Manele noted that Huawei’s contributions are well-aligned with these priorities. He specifically highlighted the rollout of 161 telecommunications towers across the Solomon Islands—an ambitious project implemented in partnership with China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd and financially supported by the People’s Republic of China.
As of 10 April 2025, 102 towers have been constructed, with 28 operational and 37 awaiting activation.
The project is expected to be completed by August 2026, enabling digital connectivity for 80% of the country’s population.
He further acknowledged Huawei’s long-standing partnership with Solomon Telekom, which has been instrumental in expanding access to broadband services, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation to PITA for selecting the Solomon Islands as the host of its 2025 AGM, to Solomon Telekom for organizing the event, and to Huawei for its ongoing contributions to the Pacific’s digital future.
