Solomon Islands witnessed its first ever youngest medallist in any regional event, when Rowena Donga of Malaita scooped her haul of medals in weightlifting, Tuesday.
The 14-year-old participated in the 49kg category and was up against older more experienced lifters including the champion lifter from Papua New Guinea, the 5-time Olympian lifter, Dika Toua.
Whilst Toua swept the particular event with ease, all eyes were on young Rowena who held her nerves to get the third spot and receive one silver medal plus two bronze medals in her event.
“I want to thank my coaches, family and friends back home for their support in my sport,” Rowena said.
“And I want to dedicate this win especially to my dad who worked really hard for me to get here,” she added.
Rowena goes to school at Panatina Secondary School and trains in Honiara.
She is happy to have represented the country and looks forward to get better in the sport of weightlifting.
